Balkans trip: does one eSIM cover every country?
Almost: one eSIM covers Albania, Montenegro and North Macedonia, but not Kosovo. The Roam2Go Europe eSIM covers 41 destinations, including Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Kosovo is not on the list.
- Trip without Kosovo: one Europe eSIM is enough for the whole route.
- Trip with Kosovo: the Europe eSIM plus a Kosovo eSIM for your days there, or a Global eSIM that covers all four countries.
- Albania only, for example a family visit: with a fixed data allowance, the Albania eSIM gives you more GB for your money.
The Europe eSIM comes with a fixed data allowance or as an unlimited plan, with unlimited from €8.95 (3 days). On the unlimited plans the connection is not cut off: after the daily allowance you keep browsing at a lower speed until it resets 24 hours later.

Which Balkan countries does the Europe eSIM cover?
Every Europe eSIM plan has the same list of 41 destinations. For a Balkans trip that means:
- Covered: Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey.
- Not covered: Kosovo.
According to the plan data, the Europe eSIM uses the One Albania network in Albania, MTEL in Montenegro and A1 in North Macedonia, on 4G/LTE in each case. Signal depends on where you are, especially in the mountains. The full country list is on the Europe eSIM product page.
What about Kosovo?
Kosovo needs its own plan. You have two options:
- A second eSIM just for Kosovo. The Kosovo eSIM is a data pack from €5.50 (1 GB for 7 days). There is no unlimited plan for Kosovo. Many eSIM phones can store several eSIMs: you install both before the trip and switch the data line at the border. Check in your phone’s settings that yours can.
- One eSIM for everything. The Global eSIM covers Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Kosovo. It has fixed data packs and no unlimited plan; prices are on the product page.
If you only spend a short time in Kosovo and use a lot of data elsewhere, the Europe eSIM plus a small Kosovo pack is the natural fit. If you would rather not switch anything on the road, take the Global eSIM.
What does it cost? Prices at a glance
Europe eSIM (41 destinations, without Kosovo)
| Data | Validity | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | 7 days | €6.95 |
| 5 GB | 30 days | €16.99 |
| 10 GB | 30 days | €23.99 |
| Unlimited | 3 days | €8.95 |
| Unlimited | 7 days | €20.50 |
| Unlimited | 10 days | €26.95 |
| Unlimited | 15 days | €36.99 |
How “unlimited” works: the connection is not cut off, however many gigabytes you use. What can change is the speed: once the daily allowance is used up, you continue at a lower speed until it resets 24 hours later. At that lower speed, messaging, WhatsApp calls, email, maps and light browsing work; HD video does not. Actual speed depends on the local network. More in our reasonable use terms. Albania only? The local plan is enough
If you are only going to Albania, for a few weeks with family for example, you do not need 41 countries. With a fixed data allowance, the Albania eSIM gives you more GB for your money than the Europe eSIM, with validity of up to 30 days. If you add a side trip to Montenegro, North Macedonia or Kosovo, the Albania plan does not cover those countries: the Europe eSIM (without Kosovo) or the Global eSIM is then the right choice.
How to set it up
- Before you travel: check that your phone supports eSIM (there is a device check on the product page), buy the plan and install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi. The instructions arrive by email.
- Important with the Europe eSIM: its 41 destinations include many home countries, such as Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Spain and Italy. Validity starts the first time the eSIM connects to a network in a covered country, which can happen at home. If you live in one of them, keep the eSIM line switched off until you leave.
- On arrival: switch the eSIM on, choose it as the line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line. On the eSIM this costs nothing extra.
- At the Kosovo border: switch the data line to the Kosovo eSIM, and back again when you leave. Its validity also starts with the first connection in Kosovo.
- Your usual SIM: turn data roaming off on that line so you do not pay for roaming data by accident.
And your home mobile plan?
Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Kosovo are not in the EU. The EU “roam like at home” rule applies in the EU countries, in Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and in Moldova and Ukraine, but not in the Western Balkans. Some operators include individual countries anyway; others bill them as a more expensive zone or sell add-on packs. Check what applies to your plan before you leave.
Calls and texts: the Europe, Kosovo and Albania eSIMs are data-only plans with no phone number. Your usual SIM can stay active for calls and texts, but outside the EU calls and texts can cost extra, including calls you only answer and texts you receive. WhatsApp and other messaging apps run on the eSIM’s data, with your usual number.
