How many gigabytes do you need?

As a guide only: your own use may differ, and your phone’s settings show how much mobile data you used last month.

Maps, messaging and email: these use little data. 1 to 3 GB usually covers a week.
Social media with photos and some video: 5 to 10 GB for a week is a common range.
Video streaming or video calls on most days: 20 GB or more, or an unlimited plan.

Do you need an eSIM in Spain?

Spain is in the EU. If your mobile plan is from another EU country, or from Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway, the “roam like at home” rule lets you use it in Spain at domestic prices, within the fair-use limits your operator may apply to data. In that case you normally do not need an eSIM.

How the eSIM works: installation and validity

At home: check that your phone supports eSIM (there is a device check on the product page) and that it is not locked to an operator, buy the plan and install the eSIM over Wi-Fi. The instructions arrive by email.
Validity: it does not start when you install the eSIM, but the first time it connects to a network in Spain.
Data roaming on the eSIM: switch it on before you go. It is only a setting, and on the eSIM it costs nothing extra.
When you arrive: choose the eSIM line for mobile data. If it is not online after a couple of minutes, restart the phone.
Your usual SIM: turn data roaming off on that line if your plan is from outside the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, or if you have used up its roaming data. It can stay active to receive calls and texts, but with a plan from outside those countries your operator can charge you in Spain for calls you make, calls you receive and texts.
