UK phone plan in the EU in 2026: roaming fees vs eSIM
It depends on your network and on when your plan started. Since the UK left the EU, surcharge-free roaming in EU countries is no longer guaranteed for UK customers: each network sets its own rules. Some plans still include EU roaming; others add a daily charge: between £2 and £2.75 on the two networks we checked.
- EE: £2.72 a day on pay monthly plans that started after 7 July 2021.
- Three: £2 a day if you joined or upgraded between 1 October 2021 and 17 December 2025, and £2.75 a day from 18 December 2025, with up to 12GB of your allowance.
If your plan charges by the day, a data-only travel eSIM can take over the data part. The Roam2Go Europe eSIM covers 41 destinations, including all 27 EU countries, with unlimited data from €8.95 (3 days).
Checked on 3 October 2026 on each network’s website. Roaming terms change often: confirm yours before you travel.
Is EU roaming still free with a UK SIM?
Not automatically. The UK government’s guidance is clear: surcharge-free roaming in EU and EEA countries is no longer guaranteed, and you should check your mobile operator’s roaming policies before travelling. Ask your network whether it applies a spending cap on data used abroad.
In practice, the answer is on your network’s roaming page. Three things decide what you pay: which network you are on, whether you are on pay monthly or Pay As You Go, and the date your plan started.
Two examples of daily charges: EE and Three (October 2026)
This is what we found on these two networks’ own websites on 3 October 2026. They are examples, not a complete list: not every network or plan has a daily charge, so check yours.
- EE. For a pay monthly plan that started after 7 July 2021, EE’s roaming checker shows a daily charge of £2.72 to use your data, calls and texts in the EE Europe Zone. EE also sells 7-day and 15-day passes.
- Three. In its 49 Go Roam in Europe destinations, the daily roaming charge is £2 if you joined or upgraded between 1 October 2021 and 17 December 2025, and £2.75 if you joined or upgraded on or after 18 December 2025. It unlocks your UK calls, texts and up to 12GB of your data.
Older plans and Pay As You Go can have different terms. If your plan already includes EU roaming and the data is enough for your trip, keep it: you do not need an eSIM.
What a trip costs: daily charges vs a travel eSIM
A daily charge is small for a weekend and adds up on a longer holiday. At £2.72 a day, using your phone every day costs £19.04 for 7 days and £38.08 for 14 days. At £2 a day it is £14 and £28. For that you use your whole UK allowance, calls and texts included.
A travel eSIM is priced for the whole period instead, and it is data only. These are the Roam2Go Europe eSIM prices for the same kind of trip:
| Data | Validity | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | 7 days | €6.95 |
| 5 GB | 30 days | €16.99 |
| 10 GB | 30 days | €23.99 |
| 20 GB | 30 days | €36.99 |
| Unlimited | 3 days | €8.95 |
| Unlimited | 7 days | €20.50 |
| Unlimited | 15 days | €36.99 |

Only going to one country? There are also single-country eSIMs: Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Portugal.
How “unlimited” works: the connection is not cut off, however many gigabytes you use. What can change is the speed: once the daily allowance is used up, you continue at a lower speed until it resets 24 hours later. At that lower speed, messaging, WhatsApp calls, email, maps and light browsing work; HD video does not. Actual speed depends on the local network. More in our reasonable use terms.
Roaming or eSIM: which suits your trip?
- Your plan includes EU roaming and the allowance is enough: use your plan.
- A weekend on a daily charge: two or three days cost a few pounds and you keep calls and texts on your own number. Paying the daily charge is the simple option.
- A week or more on a daily charge: compare the total with a fixed-price eSIM for the same dates. The longer the trip, the more the daily charge weighs.
- Heavy data use: roaming allowances have limits, such as 12GB on Three. An unlimited eSIM gives you a fresh daily allowance instead.
- A trip beyond the EU: the Europe eSIM also covers Switzerland, Turkey, Albania, Serbia and Montenegro. Each UK network has its own list of “European” destinations: check your network’s list for every country on your route.
How to use a travel eSIM alongside your UK SIM
- Before you travel: check that your phone supports eSIM (there is a device check on the product page), buy the plan and install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi. The instructions arrive by email.
- Keep the eSIM line switched off until you leave. The Europe eSIM also covers the United Kingdom, and validity starts the first time it connects to a network in a covered country, which can happen at home.
- On arrival: switch the eSIM on, choose it as the line for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line. On the eSIM this costs nothing extra.
- On your UK SIM: turn data roaming off, so your phone does not use roaming data on that line.
Calls and texts on your UK number: the Europe eSIM is data only, with no phone number. Your UK SIM can stay active for calls and texts, but they still follow your network’s roaming rules: calls you make, calls you receive and texts can be charged or can trigger the daily charge. Check with your network before you go. WhatsApp and other messaging apps work on the eSIM’s data and keep your usual number.
