A short break in London, a long weekend in Edinburgh or four days between Bath and the Cotswolds: in the UK almost everything runs through your phone, from Tube tickets to the map that gets you out of a maze of side streets. That’s why short unlimited plans work so well there: they cover exactly the days of your trip and you don’t have to keep working out how many gigabytes you have left. And there’s one detail that surprises a lot of people: after Brexit, your European tariff may not behave here the way it does at home.
Why the United Kingdom is a special case
Since it left the European Union, the European «roam like at home» rules no longer apply to the United Kingdom. Many tariffs have gone back to charging for roaming there, or apply different conditions from those in the rest of the continent, and every provider does it their own way. The advice is simple: before you fly, read the small print of your tariff and check whether the UK is treated the same as France or Italy.
With a Roam2Go eSIM, that doubt disappears: you buy the plan before you leave, you pay a fixed price in euros and you know exactly what you’ll spend on data. It usually works out better than your operator’s roaming and, above all, there are no surprises on next month’s bill.
What about your usual line?
Data always goes through the eSIM. You only need to keep your usual line active if you want to receive calls or texts, and with data roaming on that line switched off. Since the UK is outside the EU, voice and SMS roaming is usually off by default (if you want it, you have to ask your provider), and if you do have it switched on you can be charged both for the calls you make and the ones you receive, as well as for texts.
Unlimited plans for 3, 5 and 7 days
These are the durations that fit a city break best: you arrive on Friday, you’re back on Sunday or Tuesday, and the plan covers exactly those days. The 3-day unlimited plan costs €6.95, the 5-day one €10.00 and the 7-day one €12.50, VAT included. If you’re staying longer, the product page has 10, 15 and 30-day durations.
Since these plans don’t let you add days later on, always pick a duration equal to or longer than your trip. If you’re torn between 5 and 7 days, that safety margin usually pays off.
How unlimited works
Each day you get an allowance of high-speed data. With that allowance you can browse, use maps and messaging apps and watch videos as normal. If you use it all up on a given day, the connection isn’t cut off: you stay connected at reduced speed until the allowance renews the next day, which is enough for messaging, email and maps. If you share your connection from your phone, bear in mind that it uses the same daily high-speed allowance.

Unlimited or a plan with gigabytes: which suits you
There’s no single answer, but there are a couple of fairly reliable signs.
- A 3 to 7-day break with normal phone use (maps on all the time, Instagram, music on the train, the odd video call home): a short unlimited plan takes the calculator out of the equation.
- A work trip with wifi at the hotel and the office: a fixed-data plan is usually enough, because you only lean on mobile data between journeys.
- A long stay with occasional use: 30-day plans with a data allowance tend to fit better than a long unlimited duration.
Whatever the case, your real usage depends a lot on how you use your phone: watching high-quality video or scrolling through social media with autoplay uses far more than checking maps and messaging.
If you’re going to the UK for a few days, this is what to be clear about before you leave:
- The United Kingdom is outside the EU: check how your operator treats roaming there.
- 3-day unlimited: €6.95. 5-day: €10.00. 7-day: €12.50. There are also 10, 15 and 30-day options.
- The plans don’t allow you to add days: pick a duration equal to or longer than your trip.
- Buy and install the eSIM at home over wifi; activate it when you arrive.
- Leave data roaming on your usual line switched off.
Activating it: five minutes before you leave
The process is short and it’s best done calmly and over wifi. You buy the plan, you receive the QR code or installation link by email, you add it to your phone and leave it ready. When you land, you switch on the data line and that’s it.
If it’s your first time, we have step-by-step guides on activating an eSIM on an iPhone and on activating it on Android. Before buying, also check that your phone supports eSIM: most models from recent years do, but it’s worth making sure.
Once you’ve decided, you can choose the duration that suits you on the eSIM for the United Kingdom page and get it sorted before you pack.
