Colombia is a country you experience with your phone in hand: maps to get around Bogotá or Medellín, messages to confirm a transfer in Cartagena, last-minute searches to find somewhere for breakfast in Salento. An unlimited plan takes the constant gigabyte arithmetic out of the equation, which is exactly what grates when you’re only passing through for a few days. In this guide you’ll find the available durations, the real prices and how to decide which one fits your trip.

Unlimited plans for Colombia: 1, 3, 5 and 7 days

Short durations are the ones that best match the way most people visit Colombia: weekend getaways, technical stops between flights or week-long routes between city and coast. These are the prices:

• 1-day unlimited: €9.95 — the entry option, designed for a long layover or a single day of travelling around.
• 3-day unlimited: €10.18 — covers a short break in a single city.
• 5-day unlimited: €16.82 — fits a long weekend or a short two-stop route.
• 7-day unlimited: €23.32 — the typical size for a week of travel with transfers included.

If your trip is longer, there’s also the 10-day unlimited plan at €33.36 and the 15-day one at €49.90.

How unlimited works

Each day you get an allowance of high-speed data. With that allowance you can browse, use maps and messaging and watch videos as normal. If you use it up on any given day, the connection isn’t cut off: you stay connected at reduced speed, enough for messaging, email and maps, until high speed returns. It’s designed so that you’re never left cut off in the middle of a journey.

Which duration to choose for your trip

The simplest way to decide is to look at the calendar, not at your data use. Count the days you’ll be connected on Colombian soil, including your arrival and departure days, and choose a duration that’s equal to or longer than that number. If you mainly use your phone for maps, messaging and searches, a short unlimited plan is usually enough; if you also plan to make video calls or watch video every day, the experience will depend more on how you use it.

Among the short durations, the criterion is practical: 3 days for one city, 5 days for a two-stop route, 7 days for a full week with internal travel. And if you’re torn between two, it’s better to go for the longer one: for longer stays it’s best to choose a duration that covers the whole trip from the outset.

Colombia is outside the EU: what to check

European «roam like at home» rules don’t apply in Colombia. That means many European tariffs charge separately for roaming there, with different conditions from the ones you have at home, so it’s worth calling your provider or reading the small print before you travel. With a Roam2Go eSIM, on the other hand, you know the price before you leave and you pay it in euros, with no surprises on next month’s bill: for a short trip, it usually works out better value than your operator’s roaming.

And your usual number?

Data should always go through the Roam2Go eSIM. Leave your usual line active only if you want to receive calls or texts, and with data roaming switched off for that line. Since Colombia is outside the EU, voice and SMS roaming is usually switched off by default and you have to ask your provider for it specifically if you want it; and if you do have it enabled, you may be charged both for the calls you make and the ones you receive, as well as for texts. For talking to family or work, internet calls through the eSIM are the more predictable option.

How to buy and activate it

The process is short: you choose the duration, buy online and receive the QR code by email. You can install the eSIM at home over wifi, at your own pace, and leave it ready to connect when you land; the day count starts when the eSIM connects to the local network. If it’s your first time, there are step-by-step guides for iPhone and for Android, and you can also check which phones are eSIM compatible before buying.

One final tip: save the email with the QR code and instructions in a folder you can reach easily, and check that data roaming is switched on for the eSIM line on your phone when you arrive. It’s the most common reason people think an eSIM isn’t working when, in fact, all that’s missing is one switch.
