Which mobile phones are compatible with eSIM?
More and more travellers are discovering that travelling with an eSIM is far more convenient than hunting down a SIM card at the destination airport. But before making the switch, there is one key question to answer: is your mobile phone compatible with eSIM? In this article we explain how to check quickly and which devices typically support this technology.
What is an eSIM and why does compatibility matter
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a chip built directly into your device that replaces the traditional physical SIM card. It cannot be removed or inserted — it is activated digitally. This means that, in order to use one, your phone must have been manufactured with this component. If your model does not include it as standard, there is no way to add it afterwards.
The good news is that the vast majority of phones launched from 2018–2019 onwards already include an eSIM, and the trend is for each new generation to broaden that support further. If you have a relatively modern device, there is a very good chance you are already compatible.
But there is one detail almost nobody mentions: it does not depend only on the model, it also depends on the specific version. The same commercial name is manufactured in different versions depending on the country and the batch, and not all of them include eSIM. A real example: the Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro 5G has eSIM, while the 4G of the same name — the one most widely sold in Spain — does not. That is why finding your model on a compatibility list is not a guarantee, and the only check that counts is the one on your own phone.
How to check whether your phone supports eSIM
There is no need to spend hours searching through the manual. Here are the most straightforward methods, organised by operating system.
iPhone (iOS)
- Go to Settings > General > About.
- Scroll down until you find SIM Availability or eSIM Compatible.
- If you can see this option, your iPhone is compatible.
Alternatively, dial *#06# on your keypad: if an EID number appears (alongside the IMEI), your device has an eSIM. But no EID does not mean no eSIM: whether the code does nothing or returns an error notice, or the screen opens fine and only lists IMEI, ICCID and the number (common on many Android phones, especially Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO), that code settles nothing. What settles it is the menu: if there is no option to add or activate an eSIM there, that phone does not support it.
Android (Samsung, Google Pixel and others)
- Go to Settings > Connections (or Network & Internet on some models) > SIM Manager.
- If you see an option to “Add a SIM” or “eSIM”, your device supports it.
- You can also dial *#06# and look for the EID code.
Other devices (tablets, smartwatches)
Many modern iPads, some smartwatches (such as Apple Watch or Samsung Galaxy Watch), and even certain laptops also support eSIM. The process is similar: look for the SIM option in your device’s system settings.
Table: general compatibility by brand and model
This table is a general guide. It is always worth checking on your specific device, as some models sold in particular markets may not have eSIM enabled.
| Brand | Models that are typically compatible | From (approximate year) |
|---|---|---|
| Apple iPhone | XS, XR, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 (and Pro/Max/Plus) | 2018 |
| Samsung Galaxy | S20 series onwards, Z Fold, Z Flip | 2019–2020 |
| Google Pixel | Pixel 3 onwards | 2018 |
| Huawei | Some P40 and Mate 40 models (limited support) | 2020 |
| Motorola | Razr 2019, Edge+ and some Moto G models | 2019 |
| OnePlus / Oppo | Some recent flagship models | 2022+ |
⚠️ Note: some manufacturers release variants of the same model with and without eSIM depending on the market (for example, models sold in China often do not include it). Always check the exact model of your device.
Why it matters that your phone is not carrier-locked
Having a phone compatible with eSIM is not enough if your device is carrier-locked. In that case, your phone may not accept eSIMs from other operators until it has been unlocked. Most phones purchased outright (without a contract) already come unlocked. If you bought your phone on a contract or at a subsidised price, it is worth confirming this with your current operator.
Before purchasing your travel eSIM, make sure you have ticked these three boxes:
- Check compatibility: look in your phone’s settings for an option to add or activate an eSIM («Add eSIM», «Activate eSIM», «Add mobile plan» or similar); *#06# can only confirm it.
- Confirm your phone is not locked to your current operator.
- Make sure your iOS or Android is up to date: older operating system versions can sometimes struggle to manage eSIMs properly.
Already confirmed you’re compatible? The next step is simple
Once you have confirmed that your device supports eSIM, activating one for your next trip is straightforward: you purchase your plan, receive a QR code by email, and scan it. Within minutes you have a connection ready and waiting for when you land.
In our eSIM shop you will find plans for dozens of destinations around the world, designed with travellers like you in mind. No commitments, no contracts, and no need to track down a physical SIM card.
Final tips for a smooth first eSIM experience
- Check your eSIM email before installing it: with most plans you can install it from home with no rush, but for some destinations the validity starts counting the moment you install it. The email tells you which case applies to your plan, with a colour-coded notice.
- Activate it when you arrive: many plans start counting from first data use, not from installation.
- Save the QR code: if you ever need to reinstall it, you will need it (depending on the provider).
- Turn off roaming on your main SIM to avoid any nasty surprises on your bill.

Compatibility and coverage
Your phone must be eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked. Careful: it does not depend only on the model but also on the specific version — within the same model there are units with eSIM and units without. Check it on your own phone with the checker on this page before buying.
